So Belgian Roller Derby you say? How did we get here?

With 2014’s World Cup coming up, and all Belgian roller derby leagues taking off, creating a national roller derby team is only a next step within our roller derby history.

We’ve come a long way since our first national practice on June 17th of 2012! We’ve been training together for quite some time now and our coaching team is working hard to prepare us for the road to the 2014’s World Cup in Dallas (Texas, USA), and we’re ready to show the world!

Team Germany promises to be a tough first opponent. They’ve already participated in 2011’s very 1st World Cup and holds a lot of talented skaters!

We might be a small country, but our ambitions are BIG! So grab yourself a ticket, come on down and cheer your lungs out!

See you there!

A word from our coaches | Player Selection Procedure

First of all, we’d like to officially thank all the Belgium leagues for the trust they put into our coaching team. We are very proud to have been selected and will do all we can to make Team Belgium successful and all the Belgian players proud of us.

Now, time for ACTION!
We’ll make a rough first selection of 40 players by the end of November.
This selection will be based on:
– our online registration form (deadline: 14th October ’13)
– two national practices (2nd November in Charleroi and another one that will be communicated on a later date)
– Skates of Glory 2013, the Benelux roller derby tournament on 9-10th November

Applicants who’re not able to attend one of/these dates, please elaborate on it through the questions in the registration form and send in some footage to coaches@rollerderby.be (by 14th October ’13). Same goes for Belgian players, living outside of Belgium; please fill in the form and send in your footage before the deadline mentioned above.

On attendance: we believe that one of Team Belgium’s strengths is that we all live rather close together, so we’re able to meet frequently and play/practice together as a team. This is why we’d like to have 1 national practice a month. We’ll keep track of the attendance of all candidates and that will be implemented in our decision for the final roster.

And finally: to all Belgian players; this is a FRESH START!
We believe that there are lots of very good players in this country and we’ve got the more than enough talent to make a great team. Since our very first national practice, we’ve seen a lot of talented players but we know there are still a lot of interesting players out there, who didn’t attend previous national practices (yet). As we said it’s a fresh start, we won’t base our decision on previous attendance on national practices.

So, to those who were too shy/insecure to join us before, please don’t hold back and APPLY NOW!

Mr. Grey, KadhaFitness and Trick or Threat

Coaching Staff for the Female Team Belgium Roller Derby National Team

Female Team Belgium’s coaching team!

In May 2013, we started looking for coaches, interested in guiding us towards the Roller Derby World Cup in 2014!

We were more than happy to have five great applications and we thank every candidate who has applied for their time & effort they put into it.

After careful consideration and a vote from out all the Belgian leagues, we’re excited to announce Belgium’s coaching team for the 2014 Roller Derby World Cup in Dallas!

TB_coaching team

Mr Grey (Peter Lootens)

Being a former speed skater, trainer, male derby skater & Gent Go-Go Roller Girls’ (Ghent, BE) bench coach, he has quite some experience on his sleeve!

Whether it’s ref-, nso-, trainer-, tournament- or bench coach-related, he has played an active role within Belgian Roller Derby, from its starting days on.

His combination of leadership, strategy and hard core skating skills has already done wonders for the Gent-girls and he’ll be sure to bring the thunder for our female national team!

KadhaFitness (Amandine Saulnier)

She started roller derby in 2011 with the Blackland Rockin’ K-Rollers (Charleroi, BE), as a player, trainer (off- & on skates) and bench coach.

Being a natural sports addict (including horse riding, skiing, climbing, swimming, tennis, capoeira, pilates and derby), she evolved into one scary fitness machine! Her derby name was chosen by her teammates and illustrate her dictator skills, when it comes to her off-skates work-out plan!

We’re sure she’ll strengthen our cores and muscles, and we’ll respond with “YES COACH!” at all times!

Trick Or Threat (Glenn Carroy)

He is the Head Coach for the Freaky Mons’ter Derby Ladies (Mons, BE) & skates for the Belgian men’s national roller derby team, who fell in love with roller derby and all its aspects since 2011.

Trick is very dedicated and involved, eager to learn and work with other people (other coaches). He’s patient and respectful towards other players, coaches & officials, but is sure to keep us in line when it comes to the training schedule & bench!

He’s a great asset & we’re happy to have him on our coaching team!

Congrats to all three coaches!

Next-up: player selections!

Belgian roller derby leagues are looking for a national coaching team!

Today, Belgium counts eight female, two male and one junior roller derby teams. We’re all working hard to show the world what we’re made of. Belgium has a lot to be proud of, and their roller derby teams, most certainly, are one of them!

It’s about time to put Belgium on the European roller derby map as a whole, with a national division. Roller derby is all about “by the skater, for the skater”, which is why all the Belgian leagues send two representatives to the national meetings, where we discuss the what and what not’s of putting together a “Team Belgium”. The time has come to find a coaching team to lead the national division to victory in the 2014 Word Cup!

We’re looking for 3 coaches, who can (and are willing to) work together.

So, are you an open minded leader with good skating skills, coaching experience and a nose for strategy? Are you open to new ideas and input from skaters and other coaches and can you show empathy when needed? Then you might be who we’re looking for!

Note: you don’t have to be a roller derby coach, but an interest and strategy-knowledge of roller derby is required!

Job description:

A team of 3 coaches will be responsible for the training and mental preparation of the future (female) national team: Team Belgium.

Each coach will have different responsibilities and (if roller derby-affiliated) no more than 2 coaches should come from the same league(*). They have to be able to work together as a team and need to be able to work with a group of skaters of different levels, who often speak different languages (most commonly English, Dutch and French).

This ‘job’ requires a lot of investment, time and availability. You are fully committed for a whole year (season 2013-2014). This is a voluntary position, you will not be paid.

Skaters can apply for the coaching position, but can’t skate for ‘Team Belgium’ and coach at the same time.

Responsibilities of the coaching team (3)
– organize the player-selections (in cooperation with Team Belgium reps)
– prepare and organize regular trainings
– individual- and team progress
– work out a training plan (2013-2014)
– define the team’s & individual goals

Know that we see this as a combined effort, when needed, we’re here to help out or give input. It’s a combined/team effort, so you’ll not be alone in this.

How do you apply?
Send an e-mail with your previous experience(s), your motivation & a recommendation letter to info@rollerderby.be. We’ll review your application and send feedback/invite you for an intake asap!

Deadline
July, 31st of 2013

(*)Note: you don’t necessarily have to be a roller derby coach or player, but interest and commitment in/to the sport is an advantage.
